It's not just about upgrading your radiator. It's about making the radiator you have work harder. The cooling demands of a turbocharged engine can quickly increase during spirited driving, repeated acceleration, or extended track sessions. So, ACUITY developed its Super-Cooler radiator hoses to address an often-overlooked limitation in the factory cooling system: the relationship between coolant flow direction and the temperature of the air passing through the radiator.
With the factory configuration, relatively cool coolant is located near the lower radiator section, where incoming air has already been warmed by the intercooler. By reversing coolant flow, hotter coolant is routed through this lower section, while cooler coolant exits through the upper section of the radiator. This more favorable relationship between coolant and air temperatures helps the radiator reject additional heat, particularly when ambient temperatures and engine loads are high.
Originally developed through ACUITY's work on a cooling improvement project for Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), the Super-Cooler concept brings race-inspired engineering to more Civic and Integra owners with this kit.
In the factory radiator configuration, hot coolant enters the upper portion of the radiator and flows downward. While this is a conventional cooling-system arrangement, it doesn't necessarily take full advantage of the air-temperature distribution across the radiator in a turbocharged vehicle.
Air flowing through the intercooler absorbs heat from the engine's compressed intake charge before continuing through the lower portion of the radiator. This means the lower radiator section receives warmer air than the upper section, which receives relatively cooler incoming air through the grille.
ACUITY's reverse-flow design addresses this mismatch by reversing coolant circulation through the radiator. Hotter coolant now enters the lower radiator section, where it can still transfer heat to the warmer air leaving the intercooler. As coolant moves upward through the radiator, it encounters cooler incoming air, improving the temperature difference available for heat transfer.
The result is a more effective use of the radiator's existing surface area. For performance-minded enthusiasts, this is a clever way to improve cooling efficiency without simply relying on a larger radiator.
Beyond the innovative reverse-flow design, this kit replaces the factory EPDM rubber radiator hoses with premium polyester-reinforced silicone hoses engineered to handle the demanding environment of a turbocharged engine bay.
The reinforced silicone construction can tolerate under hood temperatures up to 100°F higher than the original rubber hoses. This additional heat tolerance makes the kit particularly appealing for modified vehicles and those regularly subjected to high engine loads.
The Super-Cooler reverse-flow concept originated through work for Honda Racing Corporation race cars. Rather than treating the radiator as a standalone component, ACUITY studied the way air and coolant temperatures interact throughout the cooling system.
Testing in very hot conditions demonstrated coolant temperature reductions of as much as 3.6°F (2°C) on vehicles already equipped with complementary cooling modifications, including upgraded radiators, improved grille airflow, and vented hoods.
On otherwise stock vehicles, more modest improvements of approximately 1°F (0.6°C) in hot conditions were observed.
While these reductions may appear small, sustained high-load driving places significant demands on a vehicle's cooling system. Even modest improvements in heat rejection can be valuable when combined with other supporting upgrades.
For enthusiasts building a complete cooling package, the Super-Cooler hoses provide another way to optimize system performance. Actual improvements will vary depending on vehicle configuration, ambient temperature, airflow, and operating conditions.
