Description

Stopping power in your 10th or 11th Gen Civic is dictated by a handful of parts, mainly your brake rotors and pads. When you apply pressure to your brake pedal, hydraulic fluid is forced into your brake caliper that then acts to squeeze the set of brake pads against the rolling brake rotors. Kinetic energy is converted in thermal energy and you come to a complete stop. But what happens if you want better stopping power? The first agenda is finding a better brake pad!

Choosing a brake pad is a balancing act. On one extreme you have OEM brake pads. They do the job fine for daily driving duty and last a good bit of time while giving off little dust. They’re based on a Ceramic compound. On the other extreme, you have a full Race brake pad. These are not good for the daily driver but they shine when you blast the race track. What if you want something in the middle with more performance that you can use every day? That’s where our 27WON Performance Pads come in.

You get a set of pads that deliver consistent stopping distances when the stock brake pads begin to fade. You get better modulation and bite that creates predictable and linear stops every time. What you don’t get is noisy or dust covered wheels like a Race pad delivers. Got your attention? Then read on to learn about the new 27WON performance brake pads specifically made for a simple swap from your OE pads.

Brake pads construction is pretty complicated. Three things make up pads….Backing Plates, Friction Compounds, and Shims. Friction compounds the most nuanced and are the biggest driving factor when talking about a pads ability to deliver stopping power. Without getting into the weeds and for best practices sake, you want to match your friction compound for your intended use and figure out the trade-offs involved in a way suited to your specific case.

For performance pads, metallic and semi-metallic compounds used to be the norm. They had excellent stopping power but also tended to be harsher on rotor life, gave off lots of dust and are noisy. Then, ceramic compounds came onto the scene. They eliminated most of the dust, were more rotor friendly and almost silent. But these gave up some performance. Now, hybrid ceramic/metallic compounds have entered the chat and that’s what’s used in the 27WON pads. It’s the best of both worlds without any of the drawbacks…almost a perfect middle ground if you ask us.

When we set out to develop the ultimate Street and light duty track pad you see here, it was important that we didn’t lose any of the characteristics that make the OEM Honda pads good for a daily and only build upon these positives. This meant choosing a hybrid ceramic/metallic compound we touched upon above. This compound has a very wide average coefficient of friction rating of (Mu) 0.4-0.5 with an average effective operating range of ambient – 600C.

This means that when your pads are cold they start with a strong rating which means a good initial bite Here’s where that upper number matters because at 0.5 Mu, the bite actually gets stronger once the brake pads heat up. That’s the ideal overall setup!

This compound we keep mentioning is also easy on your OEM rotors. One drawback with high friction brake pads typically is they wear out your rotor faster. Usually, you can see that when the rotor develops a lip right at the edge where the pad ends.

Because we employ a ceramic component in this pad, these pads are easier on the rotor giving it more life. It's still recommended to replace your rotors with every brake pad swap as it’s a good insurance policy to keep things well sorted. But f you’re on a budget then resurfacing your rotors is another option.

Honda tends to reuse and carry over lots of components from previous models to their next generation vehicles. And, for the rear setup, that’s exactly what they did. For the front setup, Honda changed up the caliper from the 10th Gen Si FC models to the newer 11th Gen FE and Integra. So, we have unique pads to go with either generation of Civic or Integra you may have.

For the rears, the caliper and pad size is shared across multiple models so this makes things a bit easier. One size fits all so to speak. We have bases covered all the way from the Type R 2.0T applications down through the 1.5T equipped L15 models and even the K20 NA 2.0 models.
