Description

Engine performance really comes down to one simple thing …FLOW. The more efficiently the engine can move air in and out from the intake to the exhaust tip the more potential to make power there is.

When Honda developed the 10th Generation Civic and Civic SI they developed an intercooler system that supported their goal - around 200 horsepower. However, as we push for more power we quickly find the intercooler to be a major bottleneck in the engines flow and thus potential power due to poor flow and heat dissipation.

27WON set out to design a performance front mount intercooler and piping system (FMIC) for the 2016+ Honda Civic 1.5T that provided the best balance in flow and thermal efficiency. Read below to see how 27WON continues to REDEFINE The Aftermarket with our FMIC kit.

We carefully studied the entire OEM intercooler system. From these hours of research, we found several ways to that we could REDEFINE what a performance FMIC could be for your 10th Gen Civic.

From our aluminum cast end tanks with integrated air-foils to our 4-ply wire reinforced silicone we found opportunities for improvement in all areas of this kit.

Many flow simulations were performed to make sure we utilized the entire volume of the core and not just parts of it. Coupled with hours upon hours of driving on both city streets and highways we were able to collect tons of real-world data.

But don't just take it from us. Click the button Learn More below and check out an article from Super Street Magazine detailing some of the extensive testing that went into the design of our intercooler upgrade for the 2016+ Civic.

Reducing intake air charge temperature is the #1 job of the intercooler. We not only want to remove as much heat from the air as possible, we also want to be do it consistently. This means we cannot heat soak the core.

The temperature delta is the amount of heat being removed from the boosted air as it passes through the intercooler. The OEM core performs ok for 1-2 quick pulls on OEM power but quickly becomes saturated with stagnant heat. This means it can no longer do its job well. This is a major problem for any type of performance driving.

The 27WON intercooler both removes more heat, which improves performance, but also does not become heat saturated like the OEM core. It can withstand WAY more abuse.

A big intercooler is pointless if you do not efficiently use the entire core volume. Verified by CAD flow simulations we designed the inlet and outlet end tanks to optimize flow distribution throughout the entire core. This ensures entire core is used; drastically improving the efficiency of the intercooler and thus releasing more power and potential.

Let's repeat this because it's important. Our internal airfoils better distribute the boosted airflow through the entire core increasing cooling efficiency compared to those without.

Our 27WON silicone couplers are constructed of 4-ply reinforced silicone and we didn't stop there. We added integrated wire reinforcement to these couplers.

This drastically increases the strength of the silicone coupler while still allowing for proper flex and bending for engine movement.

Testing* was performed on our 2018 SI sedan which is fully bolted including a W1 turbo kit. The only variable in the above testing was our 27WON front mount intercooler system. We have three graphs shown here for a very good reason.

* Dyno testing on a Dyno Dynamics which are known to measure low compared to most other dyno's. Pay attention to the delta here and not as much to the Max numbers.

RESULTS
  • Red Line is the OEM intercooler system tuned on 92oct fuel
  • Green Line is the drop-in result of the 27WON Intercooler System. No tuning changes were made. Drop-in results alone provided 20whp & 25wtq!
  • Magenta Line is the tune optimized for the 27WON Intercooler System. With the increased efficiency and capacity of the 27WON FMIC Kit we were able to safely add more ignition advance to increase power under the curve. This was another 15whp!

Note: with low-end torque hitting much harder in the low RPM range we opted to “soften” the torque hit to help save our stock block.
  • With optimized tuning the 27WON FMIC netted us 35whp & 25wtq with the potential to gain more low-end torque with a built engine.

The efficiency of an intercooler is directly related to the pressure drop from the cores inlet to its outlet, below we explain the importance of reducing pressure drop.

By definition, as it pertains to heat exchangers, pressure drop is the amount of "work" that is required to push the boosted air through the intercooler. The larger the pressure drop the greater the amount of work required. For best performance you want the least amount of drop you can have. By testing various core densities we were able to reduce the pressure drop from ~1.60psi to ~0.70psi thus improving overall performance.

This helps increase spool time because the turbocharger does not have to work as hard to push air through the core.

When it comes to intercoolers…size matters. The frontal area of the core is the most critical dimension to increase the efficient cooling capacity of the intercooler. The OE 4.37in height is not sufficient, we increased the height 41% to 6.50in with width nearly unchanged. This maximized the frontal area behind the grill. Thickness was increased from 2.52in to 3.70in, a 47% increase. This resulted in a total core volume increase of 120%.

Unlike some options today, the 27WON Intercooler kit comes complete with intercooler, piping, and silicone couplers. The piping was specifically designed for the L15 engine found in the 10th Gen SI and Base model Civics.

A single seamless 2.25 inch pipe is used on the “hotside” and a 2.75 inch pipe is used on the “coldside”. Staggered pipe sizes were selected to optimize for power and drive-ability. The relatively smaller 2.25 inch hotside pipe will still support well over 500whp and its smaller size helps move the hot boosted airflow through the intercooler more quickly thus improving response. The larger 2.75 inch coldside pipe was also optimized to create a large “plenum” of air just ahead of the throttle body. This helps reduce turbo lag and improve transient response.

Our single pipe inlet and outlet minimizes the number of couplers and thus the number of potential boost leaks. Integrated into every coldside pipe is a single 1/8-27 NPT port for methanol auxiliary cooling/fueling.

Daily driven for over 4 years and 35K+ miles.

Flawless performance with no experienced issues for the entire duration of ownership.

Extreme hot weather environment heat-soaked my OE FMIC and resulted in erratic / reduced performance over time.

27Won FMIC instantly and noticeably improved boost consistency, even when temps hit 115+.

No perceptible lag or downsides to this upgrade in an otherwise completely stock application.
Purchased this back in March of 23
Upgrading to this bigger FMIC was the right choice!!! It’s been running strong and helping feed cooler air!! I highly recommend going with 27Won over the competition!! Installing wasn’t terribly hard to do, mainly removing the front bumper was challenging trying not to scratch the paint. All the instructions they have for the install are perfect and detailed even for the amateur mechanic!! 27Won for the win!!!
    Easy install. Directions were awesome.
Makes a difference, especially at higher rpms.
Let me start off by saying WOW! The packaging, the quality of the intercooler far surpassed my expectations. The OEM intercooler and piping are like child’s play compared to the 27 Won. The instructions, pictures, part labeling and needed tools were precise making the installation super easy. I am so pleased with my decision to go with 27Won for my build.
Love the IC! Installation was straightforward and fun to complete.

Thank you so much for amazing products and great and easy going customer service!
Hardest part is controlling your patience with the bumper, the hot pipes, and the cold pipes. I watched a few videos and did the install without looking at the provided instructions, I don't recommend doing it this way. Took me 4hrs vs the suggested 3hrs. You will need the instructions when it comes to the clamps. I would suggest reading them and then putting your clamps on the sections of the pipes they recommend them going first. Get a good idea on how it is supposed to look and fit before attempting to install. Some youtubers will suggest that the bumper will take a while to remove, they're right. It should be around 30 minutes to an hour and a half depending on how many times you've already tackled this feat, it is a feat especially when you are going solo on this install. Just remember the hot side clamp between the turbo side silicon and the hard pipe needs to be installed first when you get to that point of the install and orientated correctly. Also you'll need to make sure that the clamp on the hard hot pipe to the intercooler silicon is orientated correctly too so it is not hitting the backside of your fog light, I found this one accidently and had to take the bumper back off to adjust. If you have the CVT, like I do, then you're going to have a little extra fun (sarcastic) with this install since you'll be presented with smaller spaces to work with. But that's where the patience and reading/following the 27Won instructions will help you. Print them or get a large screen to follow them on.
For performance... I'm not tuned as of yet and have this & their intake installed at this moment. It does seem to respond better to WOT, but it seems that 85-90% WOT is the sweet spot with our cars. After all I've read on these cars this is a part that most will overlook due to the fact that most of us with these cars grew up with NA civics. The ppl that see the need for this as one of their first or in my case second parts to install grew up with NA and turbo cars. This is that part that will let you not only keep your boost cool, but it will keep it consistently cool pull after pull after pull. Heat soak IS real and will hinder your performance.
Great product, even better instructions. Best instructions with colored pictures show every step that make installing a breeze. I highly recommend having another pair of hands as two of us were able to put the intercooler on in just under 3 hours.
I love this intercooler. It is still one of my favorite mods to date. The installation instructions were spot on, and the kit is beautiful! I can track all day and all summer with no heat soak.
Man I ripped into this thing as soon as it was delivered... little kid at Xmas style. First thing you'll notice is that its solid and built incredibly well. Your OEM IC and piping feels like a cheap plastic toy, not to mention smaller in every way.

    Install
Instructions are very detailed and clear, someone with little experience wouldn't have an issue with tackling this. I have to admit its a straight forward out with the old and in with the new kind of kit. But I took my time, followed each step as it was more optimal to make sure everything was bolted up correctly and will ensure you don't forget anything. Removal of the OEM charge pipes was the quickest part, your bumper will take the longest. Out of all the aftermarket parts I've bolted up, I had the most fun on this one. It changes a lot for your car.

    Quality
Once you pull your OEM FMIC and tiny stock piping out you're going to realize what a great choice it was to make this upgrade. Cant tell you enough how cheap the OEM parts feel. You'll definitely see when you compare the side by sides.

    Performance
Beautiful. Keeps temps so much lower than factory. Heat soak has not been an issue and the car feels more alive and breathes easier.

    Customer service
As always, phenomenal. Thanks again Vlad! lol and for the added extra throw in.

I will say...don't hesitate on picking this up, they sell quick and you wont find people getting rid of them often!

    A few small tips
*I put all my push clips, hex bolts and 10mil bolts in zip lock bags after pulling a section off. lol its extra steps but you'll never mix up where things go.
*When you're fitting your cold and hot pipe-tinker with the fitment and mock up the piping before you start clamping things down. This will ensure things button up nicely.
*You can also hook the fog lights up by yourself when putting the bumper back on-I put a few push clips on the top and got underneath the car and hooked them back up.
*Make sure you have a blanket handy once you rip your bumper off so you don't scratch it up.

Pictures can be found here https://www.civicx.com/forum/garage/storm-shadow.2342/
This FMIC was one of the first upgrades for my 10th Gen Civic Hatchback. I've had it for over a year now and it's made a huge difference in IATs and keeping heat soak at bay especially during the summer months. I live in Utah and the summers here get pretty hot (averages 100 degrees F in the middle of the day). One pull with the OEM intercooler and my knock control would be up so high that I would have to drive it like a Corolla for the rest of the day.

If you're going to be tuning your car, this is a necessary upgrade. Doesn't matter which one you get, but if you are going to drop the cash, might as well get the best one you can, comes with everything you need, and looks amazing behind the grille. There's a good reason these ones are out of stock so often.
